Today the Old Gaol is a beautiful backpackers in Grahamstown, but some still believe that it is the most haunted spot in town. Many say you can still see Henry Nicolls walking from gaol to gallows.

The beautiful library is said to be haunted by none other than a former employee. In 1943 former caretaker Robert Thomas passed away after 31 years of faithful service, he loved his work and some believe that he still keeps an eye over the library by stacking books on the floor and closing doors.

Built in the 1870’s The Rudd House is one of the most famous haunted homes in the country. The House once belonged to mining magnate HP Rudd, but the cries of a baby and the clattering of glass eventually drove the family to leave their home.
Smuts House, Pretoria
Visitors to this historic house has claimed that they have seen a man walking around the grounds, claiming that he is elderly with a “Kruger-like mustache.” He is said to be a secret keeper of the whereabouts of a so-called vast Boer treasure, buried somewhere on the property.
Probably one of the most famous ghosts in South Africa resides approximately 19km’s outside of Uniondale at the Barandas turn-off. Maria Roux was killed in a car accident in 1962 on this stretch of road. Her fiance at the time GM Pretorius survived the crash, now the ghost of Maria appears on cold winter’s nights asking for a ride. Once you have picked her up she disappears into thin air leaving only the smell of apple blossoms.
